Introduction: Fancy discovering the “French side” of Val d’Isère? Follow JC’s tracks on and off the slopes in one of Europe's most famous resorts. For the past few years we've had fantastic snow conditions for early skiing. Everyone in Val d'Isere is busy preparing the annual leg of the World Cup circuit so the resort has an "open" feeling to it and most importantly the ski domain is empty so we are often lucky enough to lay the first tracks of the season on the classic runs. Plus it is wonderful to return to the UK before Christmas having already bagged some good skiing.

The Resort
Val d’Isère key facts: altitude 1850m-3455m / 97 lifts / 300 km of slopes / 3 hours from Geneva airport
The resort: Nestled high up in the French Alps, Val d’Isère is an attractive village with a rich alpine legacy, notably the 1992 Olympics. With its abundance of shops, bars and restaurants and a reputed lively nightlife it is considered by many as one the premier ski resorts. Areas such as Le Vieux Village and Le Fornet have preserved an authentic Savoyard character, to go along with the slightly more modern twist of La Daille and the centre piéton. For those who may have skied too hard during the day, Val d’Isère also boasts a completely free bus service.
The skiing: Val d’Isère the ski world’s Mecca? Quite possibly! Altitude guarantees great quality snow throughout the extremely vast Espace Killy (the linked areas of Tignes and Val). The new cutting-edge lift system means the abundant off-piste runs are now easily accessible, to the delight of all powder hounds!
On the slopes, skiers can take full advantage of the three main sectors: Bellevarde and Solaise (both linked to the “Front de neige” for beginners) and Le Fornet. More adventurous skiers can even visit Tignes’ neighbouring slopes.
Val is renowned for its long, sunny and mostly undemanding mountain top slopes, yet some of the returns to the village can be challenging and sometimes under-graded in the afternoons. Some may opt for the “where there’s a will there’s a way” approach, others may choose a more mechanical descent.
