The Resort
Key facts: altitude 975m-2350m / 219 lifts / 650km slopes / 1.5 hours transfer from Geneva Airport.
The resort:
The charming mountain village of Champéry boasts a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for a refreshing break away from it all. Made up of an array of traditional chalets, the village sits beneath the stunning scenery of the Dents du Midi. Champéry also offers plenty to do off the slopes. The Après ski can be very lively in a number of small cosy bars and hotels, notably the Crevasse. For nightlife, the Farinet can be good, particularly at weekends. For non skiers, there are some very picturesque walks around the area as well as the narrow gauge railway trips to Montrex, Lausanne or Sion. There is also a brand new sports centre (the Palladium) in Champéry itself.
The skiing:
As far as the skiing is concerned, a cable car from Champéry takes you up to Planachaux, which has some good red and blue runs for intermediates. Good skiers and adventurous intermediates can then explore the expansive 650km circuit of the Portes du Soleil that links Avoriaz and Chatel in France and Champoussin, Les Crosets and Morgins in Switzerland. For boarders there is a half pipe at Morgins and Fun Park at Les Crosets and Avoriaz.
